Teaching My Kids About Dhul Hijjah: A Journey of Trust and Learning

With Dhul Hijjah just around the corner, I found myself reflecting on how to introduce my young children to the significance of this sacred month. I wanted to go beyond just the rituals and really dive into the heart of the lessons it offers. Specifically, I focused on the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Hagar (AS), centering on the concept of tawakkul, or trust in Allah.

One evening, as we gathered around our cozy living room, I began telling my kids the powerful story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Hagar (AS). Their eyes widened with curiosity as I narrated how these great figures demonstrated unwavering trust in Allah. I could see their little minds working to grasp the meaning and apply it to their own experiences.

To make this learning journey more interactive and engaging, I created "The Amazing Dhul Hijjah Learning Book." This book is a blend of art, literacy, math, handwriting, and socio-emotional activities, designed to make the lessons of Dhul Hijjah accessible and enjoyable for young children.

Here’s how we explored these themes together:

  1. Art and Creativity: We embarked on creative projects that brought the story to life. Simple, beautiful art activities helped my kids visualize the concepts of trust and patience in a tangible way.

  2. Literacy: Through carefully selected stories and reading exercises, we delved into the importance of Dhul Hijjah. The engaging narratives made it easier for my kids to connect with the material.

  3. Math: We incorporated counting exercises related to the ten days of Dhul Hijjah. This not only reinforced their math skills but also highlighted the significance of these days.

  4. Handwriting: Practicing Arabic calligraphy and writing key terms related to Dhul Hijjah was a fun way to improve their handwriting skills and deepen their understanding.

  5. Socio-Emotional Skills: We had heartfelt discussions about the emotional and social lessons from the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Hagar (AS). My kids learned about trust, patience, and how to rely on Allah in their daily lives.

Our days are never perfect, but when we engage in these activities, it helps both me as a mom and my children as their sensory systems are addressed. It's incredible how perfectly Allah has created everything, providing just what we need.

To preserve our work , I printed the whole pack using an Epson ET 3760 EcoTank printer and Canon Photo Matte paper. Then, I used a wire binder from Amazon to compile everything into a neat booklet. This keepsake allows us to review their work and cherish these learning moments. At the end, my husband and I signed a certificate to make our children feel accomplished and proud of their efforts.

For those of you looking to teach your children about Dhul Hijjah in an engaging and meaningful way, I highly recommend exploring these kinds of activities. If you're interested in a resource that simplifies this process, "The Amazing Dhul Hijjah Learning Book" is designed to be a low-prep, enriching experience for busy parents and curious kids alike. Inshaa Allah, may it bring the beauty of Dhul Hijjah into your home just as it has into ours
